UC|CU HONORS our TRANSGENDER Sisters & Brothers EVERY DAY... Especially today, Nov 20th, Transgender Day of Remembrance: Honoring the lives lost in 2016
UC|CU HONRA a nuestros HERMAN@S TRANSGENEROS TODOS LOS DIAS... Especiamente hoy, noviembre 20, Dia de Recordar esta comunidad|Transgender Day of Remembrance: Honrando las vidas perdidas en el 2016
Every year on November 20, transgender communities and their allies have gather to remember the lives lost to anti-transgender violence the previous year, and to celebrate and support those who survive.
The past year has been the deadliest recorded. At least 24 transgender people were murdered in 2016 in the United States, according to media reports. In 2015, there were 22 reported anti-transgender killings. As is typically the case, most of those killed in 2016 were transgender women of color.
December 20, 2016, Wilton Manors, Florida... It is with an extremely heavy & sad heart that we share that our dear friend, artist and trans community leader, DIANA HEMINGWAY has ended her life this evening.
Our hearts and prayers go out to Diana, and especially to her life partner, LJ WOOLSTON, who really needs all of our love, light & support - now more than ever.
We are proud to have had Diana have her first one woman show of her photography, this past June, as part of UC|CU's TRANSART. Rest in Peace, dear Diana.
Showcasing the Talent, Vision and Possibilities within the transgender & gender non-conforming community, the annual TRANSART Conference brings together a collection of talents, individuals & artistic genres to create awareness, nurture aspiring artists and enlighten the general population about the many layers of this community.
Started in 2015, TRANSART is the first ever juried art exhibition and conference featuring international transgender artists and their works, and was created and envisioned by Trans-Miami founder & UC|CU board member ARYAH LESTER, and DEBORAH PLUTZIK-BRIGGS, Vice President for Marketing and Philanthropy at The Betsy-South Beach.
Unity Coalition|Coalición Unida's (UC|CU) 3rd annual TRANSART is presented for FREE in partnership with Trans Miami, Miami Dade College-Wolfson, Care Resource, Stonewall Museum & Archives, The HUB|LGBT Visitor Center, Pridelines, Reading Queer, UM Miller School of Medicine, Ambiente Magazine, MDC Live Arts LAB, and the Hotel Gaythering as our HOST HOTEL.

CIARA McELVEEN is the 8th transgender person killed in the U.S. in 2017. 7 identified as female, 1 male. 5 were black, one Anglo, 1 Native American. WHERE IS OUR OUTRAGE, GAY & LESBIAN COMMUNITY?
Miami, Florida…February 28, 2017 - We cannot preach about issues affecting the LGBT community, without truly caring and fighting for ALL in our community, especially those who led the way for us all – the Transgender Community.
UNITY COALITION|COALICION UNIDA is committed to year round programming, training, resources, support & vigilance for our transgender community.
On June 28, 1969, New York City’s STONEWALL INN bar patrons clashed with police officers, in a raid that would have otherwise resulted in arrests and public shaming. However, this time the patrons fought back, setting off what we now know as the modern LGBT movement, including the tradition of LGBT Pride marches. Two often- forgotten people who made an impact that night were transgender women of color: Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. THEY led the way to our rights. THEY started the movement we all now lead and in great part – have benefitted from. We cannot leave anyone behind in our quest for EQUALITY.
There were 27 reported homicides of trans people, most of them women of color, in 2016, making it the deadliest year on record for transgender Americans. The total is likely much higher, given that some victims may have been mis-gendered by police or media, or some deaths not reported at all. NOW IS OUR TIME to fight for the Transgender Community with the same passion, vigilance and energy we have used for Gay & Lesbian issues. Where will history place YOU on Transgender rights & Equality?
TRANSART brings together a collection of talents, individuals & artistic genres to create awareness, nurture aspiring artists and enlighten the general population about the many layers of the transgender community for the first time in So. Florida’s rich cultural history.
